The difference between the black and the galvanized is that “black” construction fasteners (also called plain) are uncoated fasteners that haven’t been dipped in any type of coating material. These fasteners are for projects in which galvanization is not needed.

Galvanization refers to a construction fastener that has been dipped in a liquid zinc formula that coats the entire fastener. There are several styles of construction nuts. Below is a list of some of the commonly used nut styles. Unfortunately, to ALL of the nut styles available, we would have to write a book, but it’s still useful to educate yourself on the major ones being used today.

Each of the following nut styles can be used with a mated bolt screw in order to complete the set and become a construction fastener.

-Coupling Nut- These nuts look similar to elongated tubes and are constructed to fasten two bolt ends to each other.
-Cap Nut – These nuts are commonly used when end of the screw or bolt is not desired to be seen. They are often used for decorative finish work and can be spotted by their rounded head.
-Hex Nut- The hex nut is the most common of them all. In fact, you see it pretty much everywhere.
-Castle Nut – Named for their castle-like appearance these nuts are well suited to use with cotter pins.
-Lock Nut – A lock nut comes equipped with a nylon insert. The nylon insert protects the bolt from loosening by locking up the threads tightly. It is also sometimes referred to as the “aircraft nut”.
-Tee Nut – These are rather special nuts and are constructed for use with wood. They have teeth that recess into wood once screwed in place. This design creates a secure lock.
