Construction Fasteners & Anchor Bolts: Galvanized or Black?

February 18, 2009 9:45 am

Construction fasteners are similar to anchor bolts in that they can both created to be either black or galvanized depending on your preference.

The difference between the black and the galvanized is that “blackconstruction fasteners (also called plain) are uncoated fasteners that haven’t been dipped in any type of coating material. These fasteners are for projects in which galvanization is not needed.

Galvanization refers to a construction fastener that has been dipped in a liquid zinc formula that coats the entire fastener. The zinc outer coating is meant to protect the construction fastener from corrosion. Corrosion happens when water or moisture is introduced to the construction fastener on a regular basis. The zinc outer coating will act as a repellent and becomes a first line of defense against moisture.

Each type of coating is equally needed in their own way.  It entirely depends upon the type of project you are undergoing.  There are several types of applications used for either type of coating, and as a contractor or builder you should be familiar with which type of coating you are going to need.
